network_status_sign

docwho is tried of all the fucks at the space bellyaching about “OMG the network sucks” when 98/100 times the problem is with the observer and their ability to understand what is actually wrong with the network at the space. Sometimes the spaces 2.4GHz RF spectrum gets demolished by peoples projects inadvertently. Other times it could be round-robin DSL load balancing causing the issue. Still other times people just wanna bitch about something. This sign is so that when people bitch about the network, they can be told to look at the sign and see if there actually is a problem or not.

Project presentation the_network_is_down.pdf

Current plans are to have two set of displays, one a submarine style christmas tree status display and the other a mission control style clock showing time in days:hours:minutes since last outage.

Device will be attached to both wired and wireless networks to test both domains.

Status Lights for:

  • DNS resolution Time Since Outage/Uptime in Days/Hrs/Min/Uptime as a percentage
  • Pfsense LAN ping Time Since Outage/Uptime in Days/Hrs/Min/Uptime as a percentage
  • Wifi Net #1 ping Time Since Outage/Uptime in Days/Hrs/Min/Uptime as a percentage
  • Wifi Net #2 ping Time Since Outage/Uptime in Days/Hrs/Min/Uptime as a percentage
  • Internet ping Time Since Outage/Uptime in Days/Hrs/Min/Uptime as a percentage

Digits needed = 3 days + 2 hours + 2 minutes = 7 digits * 5 displays
